Why Closures Happen

You’ve lined up a ride with your mates, started getting keen and maybe even picked your lines for the day. Then you check online and see it. Trails closed. Mood instantly drops. We get it. We ride here too.

It can feel overly cautious when the weather looks fine from home, but there’s often a lot going on out on the network that you can’t see unless you’re actually there.

Keeping Everyone Safe Out There

Safety is always a big part of the decision. Wet rock turns slick fast, roots lose grip, landings soften and access for emergency vehicles can change quickly. If something goes wrong deep in the network during poor conditions, getting help in can take much longer than most people realise.

“One sketchy slide on wet rock is all it takes to remind you why these closures exist, It’s way better coming back when it’s prime instead of testing your luck.”

Rain Changes Everything

Rain is the biggest factor we deal with. When the ground softens, tyres cut into the surface and water follows those lines straight down the trail. That’s how ruts, erosion and long term damage start.

Even a short ride when things are too wet can undo weeks of shaping, packing and drainage work that keeps the trails riding well.

Sometimes the Trails Need the Tools

Closures also happen when we’re working on the network. That might be machines rebuilding sections, fixing drainage, clearing fallen trees or refreshing features.

Heavy equipment and riders moving at speed don’t mix safely, so sometimes the best option is to close things briefly and get the job done properly so everyone can ride again sooner.

It’s Not Just Dirt, It’s the Whole Environment

The trails don’t exist in isolation. They sit within a living landscape of creeks, vegetation and wildlife.

Riding in the wrong conditions can push sediment into waterways, damage plant life and slow natural recovery after heavy weather. Looking after the environment means the trails stay healthier, more resilient and better to ride long term.

When Closures Get Ignored, Everyone Pays

Ignoring closures creates flow on effects that most riders never see.

  • Trails take longer to reopen
  • Repairs increase and volunteer hours blow out
  • Ride quality drops across the network
  • Damage can trigger longer shutdowns or tighter access rules
  • Safety risks increase for everyone

A single bad decision can ripple across the whole community.

What We’re Up To Behind the Scenes

When the network is closed, we’re usually out there in muddy boots doing the less glamorous work. Assessing damage, clearing debris, fixing drainage, reshaping lines and checking features so everything is safe to reopen. Most of this effort disappears once the trails are running well, which is exactly how it should be.

What You Can Do on a Closed Day

Seeing the closure online doesn’t mean the day’s a write off. It might mean shifting plans to another open trail elsewhere; you could check to see if MAD MTBC is open. They have awesome trails there and it’s right near Mackay!

If not, you can always give the bike some love in the shed, stretching out tight legs or just locking in a date for the next ride.

Looking After the Trails So They Look After Us

These trails belong to all of us. Respecting closures helps protect the dirt, the environment and the people who ride here. It means more good days on the bike, better trail quality and a stronger riding community over time. It’s not always about today’s ride. Looking after the trails means they’ll keep looking after us.
