Tackling rain, heat and humidity

Finch Hatton delivers the kind of lush, tropical riding that dreams are made of. But with all that rainforest magic comes a few extra challenges, particularly rain, heat and humidity. The good news? With a few simple tips and the right mindset, you can ride year-round and enjoy every minute of it.

Let’s start with the rain. Yes, it rains in Finch Hatton MTB, and sometimes it really rains. But a wet trail doesn’t mean a bad ride. In fact, some of the trails here ride beautifully after a bit of moisture, with grippy dirt and cool temps.
That said, it’s important to check trail conditions before you head out. If the trails are closed or waterlogged, give them a break. When you do ride in the wet, lower your tyre pressure slightly for better traction, avoid hard braking to minimise skidding, and pack a dry change of clothes for the post-ride hangout.

Humidity is part of the tropical experience, and while it won’t stop your ride, it can sneak up on you if you’re not prepared. Hydration is your best friend. Make sure you’re carrying enough water, more than you think you need, and sip regularly. A camel pack is a great way to stay hands-free and keep water accessible at all times. Electrolyte tablets or hydration mixes are also helpful for longer rides.

And don’t forget snacks. Pack a few good-quality options like muesli bars, trail mix or fruit chews to keep your energy levels up across multiple laps. Wear lightweight, moisture-wicking gear that lets your skin breathe. Nothing is worse than being drenched and chafing halfway through a run.

When the heat cranks up, time your rides early or late in the day to avoid the full force of the midday sun. The trails at Finch Hatton are well shaded in many places, but even so, regular breaks with some good snacks and water, a good pair of riding sunnies, and a quality sunscreen go a long way. If you’re hitting the shuttles, make the most of the ride up to cool off, rehydrate, and give your legs a rest.

Lastly, don’t forget your bike needs care in these conditions too. Mud, grit and moisture can wreak havoc on your drivetrain and suspension. Luckily, there’s a bike wash station conveniently located next to the car park, making it easy to give your bike a quick rinse after each ride. Wipe down moving parts, lube your chain regularly, and your bike will be ready to roll next time. A few minutes of maintenance goes a long way in the tropics.

Riding in the rain, heat and humidity doesn’t have to be a hassle. It’s part of what makes the Finch Hatton experience so unique. Come prepared, stay cool, and embrace the elements. It’s all part of the ride.

Happy shredding. 🤘
