Let’s talk airflow trails
Airflow trails, also known as flow trails, are purpose-built mountain biking paths that provide riders with a smooth, rhythmic experience, emphasising momentum and minimal braking. These trails are meticulously designed to enhance the natural terrain, incorporating features like berms, rollers, and gentle jumps to create a sensation of ‘flow’ as riders navigate the course. It’s akin to flying through the landscape!
Design and Features
The primary objective of airflow trails is to offer a seamless riding experience that caters to various skill levels. By integrating elements such as banked turns, rolling terrain, and optional technical features, these trails allow riders to maintain consistent speed and control. The design encourages the use of body movements to ‘pump’ through undulations, generating speed without excessive pedalling. This approach not only enhances the riding experience but also reduces environmental impact by minimising trail widening and erosion.
Global Examples
One notable example is the “Hazy Days” trail in Blue Derby, Tasmania. Built as a miniature version of the renowned “Air Ya Garn,” it was the first green-rated airflow track constructed by World Trail. With a wide footprint and multiple lines of rolling obstacles, it caters to both novice and advanced riders, offering a versatile riding experience.
In the United States, the Allegrippis Trails in Pennsylvania feature the “Osprey” and “Hydro Loop” trails, celebrated for their flowy design that allows riders to enjoy a predominantly downhill run with minimal pedalling.
Here in Finch Hatton
Stage 1 of Finch Hatton MTB offers over 14 kilometres of predominantly Airflow trails, designed to thrill and challenge enthusiasts of all levels. Constructed by the masters at World Trail, their master plan envisions an expansive network nearing 100 kilometres, aiming to redefine Finch Hatton as one of Australia’s premier trail towns.
So, get out there and enjoy the flow!
