Rainproof Rides: wet-weather riding at Finch Hatton
Finch Hatton’s Resilient Trails
Mountain bikers know the frustration of trails closing after rain, leaving their riding plans stuck in the mud – literally.
Finch Hatton MTB is the exception. Thanks to their expert design, unique soil composition, and proactive maintenance, these trails offer an incredible riding experience even after a downpour.
Here’s why…
World-class design and construction
Finch Hatton MTB trails were designed and constructed by World Trail, who went above and beyond to ensure optimal wet-weather riding conditions. Their meticulous drainage systems prevent water from pooling and keep the trails rideable even during heavy rains.
While many other trail networks become treacherous or unrideable in similar conditions, Finch Hatton remains a mountain biker’s paradise.
The secret is in the soil
The key factor that sets Finch Hatton MTB apart is its soil. Most of the park is built on a decomposed granite base, which compacts and drains exceptionally well. Unlike clay or black soil areas that become sticky and unusable in the wet, Finch Hatton MTB trails provide excellent traction – a phenomenon mountain bikers affectionately call “hero dirt.” Hero dirt gives you the confidence to ride hard, offering exceptional grip and no dust.
However, not all areas of the park are created equal. There are two exceptions to the stellar wet-weather performance:
- G’day G’day Trail: The middle section through the open field contains some clay-rich soil. To counter this, a wet-weather bypass has been constructed, ensuring riders can avoid the softer, more damage-prone areas.
- Cane Fields Jump Park: This section, including trails like Tinny, Off the Rails, Rusty Tojo, Bung Eye, and Big Bickies, features a high clay content. Riding here in wet conditions can cause trail damage, so these areas are closed during periods of significant rain until they dry out.
It’s best to check our website and Trailforks where Jobe, FHMTB’s Recreation Trails Leading Hand, updates all trail status’ following wet weather.
Proactive trail management
Local trail managers are vigilant about protecting the trails and rider safety.
After significant rainfall, riders should proceed with caution, as water ruts, fallen branches, and debris may be present until repairs are completed. Riders are also encouraged to avoid clay-heavy sections.
During extended rain, the jump park is closed to prevent damage.
Finch Hatton MTB trails are a testament to expert design, natural advantages, and dedicated maintenance. Whether you’re chasing hero dirt after a rainstorm or tackling loose-over-hard terrain in drier weather, these trails offer something special.

Ride responsibly and enjoy the adventure
Remember to ride responsibly, respect closures, and be mindful of your surroundings to ensure these trails remain a haven for riders for years to come.
