Finch Hatton MTB is a dream destination for mountain bikers, but the adventure doesn’t end when you roll off the trails.

This lush corner of the Mackay region offers an incredible mix of nature, wildlife, food, and scenic spots that make it well worth extending your visit. Whether you’re after a post-ride cool-down, a scenic hike, or the best pies in the region, here’s what else you can experience beyond the trails.

Finch Hatton Gorge

Explore Finch Hatton Gorge

If you need to refresh after a day of riding, head straight to Finch Hatton Gorge. This stunning rainforest escape is home to crystal-clear rock pools, cascading waterfalls, and lush tropical scenery. A short hike will take you to Araluen Falls, perfect for a cool dip, or venture a little further to Wheel of Fire Falls for a secluded swim in one of the most picturesque spots in the region.

Keep an eye out for native wildlife along the way!

Platypus Spotting at Broken River

One of the best places in Australia to spot the elusive platypus in the wild is just a short drive from Finch Hatton. Broken River in Eungella National Park offers several viewing platforms where you can quietly watch these fascinating creatures surface in the calm waters.

The best times to see them are early morning or late afternoon, so plan a visit around these hours for the best chance of a sighting.

Sky Window Lookout

For breathtaking panoramic views over the Pioneer Valley and beyond, Sky Window Lookout is a must-visit. Located in Eungella National Park, this lookout offers a stunning vantage point to take in the landscape, stretching from the rainforest-clad mountains to the coastline in the distance. It’s a great spot for a picnic or simply soaking in the beauty of the region.

The legendary pies of The Pinnacle Hotel

The Battle of the Pies: Pinnacle vs. Criterion Hotel

No trip to Finch Hatton is complete without testing out the legendary pies of The Pinnacle Hotel. Known far and wide for their generously filled, flaky-crusted masterpieces, these pies have developed a cult following among visitors and locals alike. But for those who love a good rivalry, The Criterion Hotel in Finch Hatton also serves up some serious competition.

The only way to settle the debate? Try both and decide for yourself!

Melba House Visitor Information Centre

If you’re looking for more things to do in the area, a stop at Melba House in Marian is a great place to gather ideas. This charming visitor information centre is housed in the childhood home of famed Australian opera singer Dame Nellie Melba. Not only can you pick up maps and recommendations, but you can also enjoy a quality coffee while soaking in some local history.

Eungella Chalet

More Local Gems

  • Eungella Chalet – A historic hotel perched on the edge of the escarpment, offering incredible views and a great meal.
  • Cedar Grove Track – A short, family-friendly hike through the rainforest with diverse flora and fauna.

A Destination Beyond the Trails

Whether you’re here to ride or just explore, Finch Hatton and the surrounding region offer an unforgettable mix of adventure, nature, and local flavors. So next time you visit for the MTB trails, take some extra time to experience everything else this incredible part of Queensland has to offer—you won’t regret it!
